BioBind sorbent capacity proved during oilspill response demonstration in small wave basin at SBOIL lead partner University of Rostock

In January 2017 the Chair of Geotechnics and Coastal Engineering at the University of Rostock hosted and supported oil spill response researchers from the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Leipzig. A small spill was created in the 4×4 m wave basin to demonstrate the oil binding capacity of the wooden oil binders under wave attack. These Binders shall be used in SBOIL field demonstrations and trainings. Meanwhile the activity of oil degrading microorganism was observed and measured. The lab demonstration showed good correlation to past lab results on smaller scale. Spilling oil into the Baltic Sea for research is extremely regulated or even prohibited. Therefore alternatives are needed to demonstrate the potential of this new spill response concept.
